(a) Examples of medicinal plants and their meristematic tissues as sources for stem cell generation. (b) Advantages of using medicinal plant stem cells in research and industrial applications. (c) In pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical development, lab-scale research can be efficiently translated into large-scale, cell culture-based production. The resulting bioactive compounds can be utilized as drugs or as active ingredients in skincare products to stimulate antioxidant activity or collagen production. (d) Omics analyses enable the identification of candidate genes involved in stem cell development and the biosynthesis of bioactive compounds. Molecular biology tools facilitate the creation of genetic vectors for gene knockout via clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)-based technology, manipulation of cultured cells, and synthetic biology approaches using heterologous hosts such as yeast. These efforts contribute to a deeper understanding of the genetic regulatory networks governing medicinal plant stem cell development and differentiation.
