Figure | Artistic depiction of a diffractive optical processor for massively parallel and universal approximation of nonlinear functions. Input variables are encoded into the phase of a light wave, which propagates through optimized, static diffractive layers to produce output intensities corresponding to unique nonlinear functions—all executed in parallel at the speed of light propagation and at extreme spatial density, restricted only by the diffraction limit of light.
