Ethnicity-Based Differences in Histological Features of Carotid Endarterectomy Plaques (IMAGE)
Caption
Comparison of histological characteristics between 75 Chinese (1,152 sections) and 111 U.S. (1,843 sections) carotid plaques. Consecutive sectioning and component analysis revealed that Chinese plaques were more homogeneous, with larger lipid pools and more recent intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH). In contrast, US plaques exhibited more advanced features and later-stage IPH. These findings suggest ethnicity-related variations in carotid atherosclerosis progression and potential differences in therapeutic response.
