A study in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging has found that acute and chronic depression are associated with distinct mechanisms in the brain’s reward system. These images show cellular changes in response to varying degrees of inflammation. The figure illustrates the progression of neuroinflammation from a healthy state to acute and chronic inflammation.
