Reduced Gray-White Contrast in Chronic Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in World Trade Center Responders (IMAGE)
Caption
Research in Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging among World Trade Center (WTC) responders with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has uncovered measurable physical changes in their brain structure, most strongly associated with re-experiencing symptoms. This image shows that WTC responders with chronic PTSD exhibited widespread decreased gray-white contrast (GWC) compared to trauma-exposed controls with no diagnosis or history of clinically significant PTSD (yellow and red colors indicate differences).
