Proportion of patients with high relative abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum (IMAGE)
Caption
Among multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, those with a high relative abundance of Fusobacterium nucleatum together with other periodontal bacteria were more likely to have moderate to severe disability (EDSS ≥ 4) than those without this bacterial combination. No similar association was seen in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) or myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease (MOGAD), suggesting that the co-occurrence of oral pathogens may be particularly relevant to disability severity in MS.
