Multiscale structure design, preparation, microstructure, and mechanical properties of ZrC-based ceramics. (IMAGE)
Caption
The ZrC-based multiphase ceramic, fabricated via two-step in-situ reactive spark plasma sintering, features a multi-scale microstructure. This structure consists of atomic-scale (Zr,Ti)C and (Ti,Zr)B2 solid solutions, nano-scale SiC particles that pin grain boundaries, and micro-scale toughening TiB2-SiC agglomerates, all of which contribute to its excellent mechanical properties. Compared to conventional ZrC-based ceramics, the resulting ZTS-30B ceramic exhibits a remarkable combination of high flexural strength (824 MPa) and fracture toughness (7.5 MPa·m1/2).
