In 2020, Japan relaxed the facility criteria for performing rotational atherectomies, expanding it from designated training hospitals to smaller hospitals with certified operators. The new regulations did not significantly increase the rate of complications associated with percutaneous coronary interventions and increased access to advanced therapies to a wider swathe of patients.
