Alzheimer’s is formed by proteins in brain cells that inherently lack a stable folded structure and self-assemble into aggregates, causing them to become disordered themselves. Kobe University biochemical engineer MARUYAMA Tatsuo has now developed a strategy for intercepting these disease-causing proteins with fragments of their mirror images. The interaction can be likened to a right and a left hand fitting together, making it impossible for the left arm to grab other things.
