Slump 001 (IMAGE)
Caption
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in Alaska: Three adjacent thaw slumps with a span of 600 meters (1,969 feet) overall and up to 3-4 meters (~6-13 feet) deep. The slump in the foreground expanded and stabilized where willow shrubs and grasses have recolonized the terrain. The slumps in the background keep expanding, preventing vegetation recolonization.
