The vmPFC-striatal circuit supports neonatal vocalization and striatal circuit maturation. Neural activity in the vmPFC rises before pups produce ultrasonic calls.
Experimentally increasing vmPFC activity further enhances vocal output, improves vocal transition diversity, elevates striatal Foxp2 expression, and increases Vglut1-positive corticostriatal terminal signals. In Foxp2 mutant mice, vmPFC activation partially restores vocal communication deficits.
