Gerald A. Soff, M.D., chief of classical hematology at Sylvester, led the phase 2 clinical trial of avatrombopag with a goal to treat 40 patients with gastrointestinal cancers who were experiencing ongoing CIT. The drug proved so effective, however, that Soff and his colleagues were able to stop the trial at their interim analysis of 23 patients.
