Proposed model deciphering that light triggers seed germination through UPL3-mediated PIF1 degradation (IMAGE)

Proposed model for light-induced seed germination via UPL3-mediated PIF1 degradation. Darkness-stabilized PIF1 proteins repress seed germination. Upon red light irradiation, photo-activated phyB translocates into the nucleus, where it directly interacts with E3 ubiquitin ligase UPL3 and PIF1 to enhance the UPL3-PIF1 association. PhyB may directly enhance the UPL3-PIF1 interaction (i) or bind UPL3 and PIF1 independently, yielding an additive effect on UPL3-PIF1 association (ii). This promotes UPL3-dependent polyubiquitination and degradation of PIF1, enabling timely seed germination under favorable light conditions.
