The images associated with the traditional Japanese spousal terms ‘shujin’ and ‘kanai,’ which are still commonly used in Japan. Male-centric Japanese spousal terms have largely lost their literal meanings and are now used with implicit connotations similar to more neutral terms such as ‘otto’ and ‘tsuma.’ However, Japanese males still retain relatively strong male-centric associations with both traditional and neutral terms, whereas Japanese females show much weaker associations.”
