Figure | Dual-band hydrochromic optical modulator for multimodal anticounterfeiting and encryption. a, Conventional hydrochromic optical modulators provide only single-level information switching in the visible region, making the hidden pattern visible or invisible depending on the dry or wet state. b, The dual-band hydrochromic optical modulator developed in this work enables three-level authentication through visible switching, mid-infrared emissivity modulation, and ATR–FTIR-based chemical signature analysis. c, Proof of concept anticounterfeiting demonstration showing that the device can encode different information in visible images, infrared images, optical and thermal spectra, and chemical signature analysis. This multimodal strategy improves authentication reliability by requiring multiple independent signals for verification.
