Schematic diagram of the human brain system with artificial spiking neurons and systems. (IMAGE)

The material-device-circuit-system perspective is adopted to provide a comprehensive overview of artificial spiking neurons. It starts with spiking enabling physics such as phase transitions, ion motion, and ferroelectric switching, then shows how these effects become controllable neuron devices judged by energy, speed, endurance, and stability. The devices are assembled into practical circuit templates, and finally integrated into multimodal neuromorphic perception and brain inspired computing to test scalability and guide the next round of materials and device design.
