Diagram of adaptive traits of primary roots under drought stress. Drought stress stimulates primary root elongation, including an increase in meristem cell number and cell elongation in the elongation zone. Primary root elongation comes at the cost of a reduction in diameter. The decrease in primary root diameter is determined by the thickness of the cortex and stele. Ep., epidermis; Cor., cortex; En., endodermis; Ste., stele.
