Distinct rotational growth modes of carbon nanotubes (IMAGE)
Caption
In free-rotation mode, CNTs rotate irregularly around catalyst nanoparticles and enabling the growth of CNTs with straight walls and high crystallinity. In restricted-rotation mode, additional CNT-substrate contact restricted the rotational freedom. This restriction constrains carbon incorporation pathways at the catalyst-CNT interface, thereby inducing the formation of defective CNTs.
