Host-directed therapy enhances antibiotic efficacy against intracellular periodontal pathogens (IMAGE)
Caption
Researchers identified host-cell pathways that Porphyromonas gingivalis exploits to invade and persist within periodontal tissues. Blocking these pathways, particularly with simvastatin, enhanced antibiotic efficacy, reduced inflammation and bone loss, and improved periodontal healing in a rat model of periodontitis. The study highlights the potential of antibiotic adjuvants in treating periodontitis.
