Schematic Illustration of Delayed Antiviral Responses in AT2 Cells Promoting Influenza Virus Replication (IMAGE)
Caption
After entering the alveolar region, influenza virus preferentially infects AT2 cells over AT1 cells, leading to greater AT2 cell loss. This selective susceptibility is linked to a weaker antiviral response in AT2 cells, characterized by reduced induction of interferons, interferon-stimulated genes, and chemokines. As a result, AT2 cells are less able to control viral replication, which may contribute to alveolar epithelial injury during influenza infection. AT1, alveolar type 1 cell; AT2, alveolar type 2 cell; IFN, interferon; ISG, interferon-stimulated gene.
