Oxidation of multi-principal component diboride at 2300 ℃ under ultra-fast heating (IMAGE)
Caption
A novel ultra-fast heating method (100 ℃/s to 2300 ℃) enables convenient and efficient evaluation of oxidation resistance in multi-principal component diborides. The functional element Ti plays a dual role: densifying the outer oxide layer as an oxygen barrier and inducing a porous inner network that buffers thermal stress during cycling. This work reveals that beyond high-entropy effects, the design of oxidation-resistant multi-principal component non-oxide ceramics can follow a “structural-functional element synergy” principle—a strategy extendable to non-equimolar systems for next-generation reusable thermal protection materials.
