Human mobility drives wastewater emissions — and offers a decarbonisation lever. This infographic illustrates how population movements — including mass holiday outflows and daily commuting — reshape wastewater inflow patterns and their alignment with fixed treatment capacity. Poor alignment lowers the Treatment and Inflow Dynamic Equilibrium (TIDE) index and raises greenhouse gas emission intensity. The proposed mobilityinformed strategies, gradient shutdown during holidays and flow equalisation during routine days, restore inflowcapacity alignment. They can cut plantlevel emissions by up to 18% and improve TIDE by 22% on average across Chinese cities, offering a lowcapital, managementled climate solution.
