Electronic-structure regulation enhances K2NiF4-type cathode performance for protonic ceramic fuel cells (IMAGE)
Caption
Coordinated regulation of the d-band center and d-p orbital alignment gives LSFO a smaller Fe 3d-O 2p energy separation than LSMO, favoring oxygen-defect formation, hydration-related proton incorporation, proton migration, and oxygen reduction kinetics. DFT calculations and experimental transport measurements support these electronic structure advantages, which ultimately translate into substantially higher power output of LSFO-based PCFCs at 550-700 °C.
