This image decomposes changes in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) across major disease categories from 1990 to 2021 into contributions from epidemiological change, population growth and population ageing. Black dots indicate the total change in DALYs. Positive values indicate increases associated with the corresponding component, whereas negative values indicate decreases. For other COVID-19 pandemic-related outcomes, the 1990 baseline was treated as a structural zero because this cause group was not applicable before the COVID-19 pandemic. Its decomposition therefore represents the newly emerged pandemic-related DALY burden in 2021 rather than a long-term change in a pre-existing disease burden.
