Expansion Microscopy (ExM)

The image shows how a sphingomyelin derivative is distributed within a Chlamydia inclusion and the surrounding host cell. The image was captured using 8× ExM. This makes it possible to distinguish individual bacteria within the inclusion and even to examine the nucleoid of the tiny elementary bodies.
