Same weight cycles, different outcomes (IMAGE)
Caption
Repeated weight-loss and weight-regain cycles can have different long-term effects on body composition depending on the initial adiposity status. In individuals who are initially lean but susceptible to obesity, weight cycling may progressively increase the proportion of adipose tissue relative to lean tissue, resulting in greater overall adiposity over time. In contrast, individuals with established obesity tend to return to a similar body composition after repeated cycles of weight loss and regain, leading to comparatively little long-term change in adiposity. Yellow indicates adipose tissue and blue indicates lean tissue. Adapted from Magkos et al., Nature Reviews Endocrinology.
