Bimodal particle size grading enables dense percolated Al2O3–TiC ceramics with enhanced conductivity and EDM machinability (IMAGE)
Caption
Schematic illustration of the fabrication process and performance of Al2O3–TiC composites via a bimodal micro/nano-Al2O3 particle size grading strategy. Micro-sized Al2O3, nano-sized Al2O3, and micro-sized TiC powders are mixed and consolidated by SPS. Nano-Al2O3 fills interparticle spaces and pins TiC grain boundaries, while micro-Al2O3 coarsens, thereby promoting a continuous 3D TiC network. At 10 vol% nano-Al2O3, the composite exhibits maximum relative density, flexural strength, and electrical conductivity, along with the lowest percolation threshold, yielding EDM-machined surfaces with minimal damage, fewer pores, and reduced roughness (Ra = 6.35 μm).
