Phylogenetic tree of BK conductance (IMAGE)
Caption
A tree showing the evolutionary relationships between mammals and other animals. The color of the lines joining the trees indicates the unitary conductance of BK channels — higher conductance is related to mammals (red) and birds (dark orange), while lower conductance is found in other vertebrates (Deuterostomia) and across Protostomia, such as mollusks (blue) and insects (green).
Mapping the BK unitary conductance to animal evolution, mammals show the highest conductance while mollusks show some of the lowest values.
