The electric field of light accelerates electrons (yellow stripes) through the energy landscape – the band structure – of graphene. If the electrons in the lower band (the valence band) approach the upper band (the conduction band) at a sufficient speed, they can tunnel through the energy gap into the excited state via a Landau-Zener-Majorana transition.
