Understanding Overtourism Risk in Suburban Tokyo (IMAGE)
Caption
A new study examines how tourism practitioners assess overtourism risk in suburban Tokyo by comparing their perceptions with visitor trends. Although practitioners considered overtourism unlikely, visitor numbers at one Japanese garden increased by 27.2% between fiscal years 2019 and 2020, even as visitor numbers at many other attractions declined. The findings highlight the importance of combining local knowledge with visitor data to better understand tourism pressures and identify emerging risks.
