Cuticular Hydrocarbons (IMAGE)

Cuticular hydrocarbons cover the bodies of all insects like a layer of wax, consisting of a mixture of liquid and solid components. The hydrocarbons of Myrmica rubra can even form crystal, here visible under the microscope as star-like structures.
