Injury due to a heart attack activates C/EBP proteins in the epicardial cells on the surface of the heart and induces inflammatory responses that modulate heart contractile functions. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the Nov. 15, 2012, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The paper, by Guo N. Huang at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, TX, and colleagues was titled, "EBP Transcription Factors Mediate Epicardial Activation During Heart Development and Injury."
