Keeping a Beating Heart in Rhythm (2 of 3) (IMAGE)
Caption
This schematic drawing shows potassium channels that open normally, allowing the heart to relax. Time for heart relaxation can be measured by the QT interval in the electrocardiogram (ECG). This image relates to an article that appeared in the March 30, 2011, issue of Science Translational Medicine, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. C. Jons of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, N.Y., and colleagues, was titled, “Use of Mutant-Specific Ion Channel Characteristics for Risk Stratification of Long QT Syndrome Patients.”
