Catchment Geology Rules Freshwater Plant Communities (1 of 14) (IMAGE)
Caption
Aquatic plants that are capable to utilize bicarbonate often show signs of precipitated calcium carbonate on their leaf surfaces (the tiny white particles on the leaves). The example above is from 'curly waterweed' (Lagorasiphon major). This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 15 Nov. issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by L.L. Iversen at University of Copenhagen in Copenhagen, Denmark, and colleagues was titled, "Catchment properties and the photosynthetic trait composition of freshwater plant communities."
