Flawless Films of Alumina Glass Flex without Fracturing at Room Temperature (5 of 5) (VIDEO)
Caption
The atomistic model of the aluminum oxide glass is strained sideways at room temperature and the fast-changing blue areas indicate where the atoms are permanently switching places to allow straining of the material without fracture. This material relates to a paper that appeared in the 15 Nov. issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by E.J. Frankberg at Tampere University in Tampere, Finland, and colleagues was titled, "Highly ductile amorphous oxide at room temperature and high strain rate."
