SEM Image of the Frictional Hairs (IMAGE) University of Cambridge Caption This is a scanning electron microscopy image of conical, micrometer-sized outgrowths that cover the tarsal "heel pads" of some stick insects (false colors). By combining properties of hard and soft materials, these specialized "frictional hairs" are beneficial in that they are non-sticky but produce high coefficients of friction.
