Heart sections (gestational day 14.5) from a control mouse (left) and a mouse lacking the protein Vhl (right), show the loss of HIF1 immunofluorescence in the control contrasting with the high levels in the mutant, both in the trabeculae (arrowheads) and compact myocardium (bars). Sustained expression of HIF1 in the mutant results in a marked thinning of the compact myocardium.
