Small Plants Are Earliest Evidence of Wood (IMAGE)

Transverse section of an Early Devonian (407 million years ago) plant with a small amount of wood. The plant is only a few centimeters high. Its wood predates, by at least 10 million years, other early occurrences of wood. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Aug. 12, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. Philippe Gerrienne of the Université de Liège in Liège, Belgium, and colleagues was titled, "A Simple Type of Wood in Two Early Devonian Plants."
