NASA Sees 2 Forest Fires in Central and Southern India (IMAGE)
Caption
Fires are burning in at least two forests in central and southern India, and NASA's Aqua satellite captured an image of the smoke from them, and picked up on the heat signatures of the fires. This natural color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer instrument on NASA's Aqua satellite was captured on Feb. 27, 2012 at 0800 UTC (3 a.m. EST) Fires are seen as red dots and smoke appears as a light brown color. Two forest areas shown in this image are dealing with forest fires. The Alluri Sitaramaraju forest area, located near the coast of the Bay of Bengal has many fires burning. To the west, more fires were spotted by Aqua, and several areas of smoke were seen coming from the Medaram-Tadavi Forest Range, located in Medaram, Andhra Pradesh, India. Andhra Pradesh is one India's 28 states, and is located on the southeastern coast. It is India's fourth largest state by area and the capital city is Hyderabad.
