This animation of Hurricane Irma as a Category 5 hurricane was made using data from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission (GPM) on Sept. 5, and again on Sept. 7, 2017, as the storm approached Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Red areas indicate heaviest rainfall. GPM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japan Exploration Agency (JAXA). TRT: 01:03
