Scientist Discovers Sling and 'Lasso' Mechanism Used by Inflammatory Cells (VIDEO)
Caption
Klaus Ley, M.D., a scientist at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology, has discovered a key step in the journey of inflammation-producing immune cells (shown here), which are the underlying cause of many diseases. In this remarkable video, taken using pioneering imaging technology, Dr. Ley reveals how inflammatory cells use a membrane sling and "lasso" to hold their ground in high blood flow in the vessel wall. The bottom video, showing a mouse neutrophil, was published today in Nature. Better understanding of these processes could lead to new ways to fight disease.
