Broken Symmetry in Fermion Exposed (2 of 2) (IMAGE)
Caption
This shows the schematic electronic structure in the hidden order phase, overlaid on the crystal structure of URu2Si2. Below the hidden order transition temperature, the state breaks the four-fold symmetry and the in-plane anisotropy elongated along [110] direction emerges. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Jan. 28, 2011, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The essay, by Dr. R. Okazaki of Kyoto University in Kyoto, Japan, and colleagues was titled, "Rotational Symmetry Breaking in the Hidden-Order Phase of URu2Si2.”
