This is a wildfire in the boreal forest of northwest Ontario, Canada, during the 1976 fire season when a total of 3,985 fires consumed 544,108 hectares (1,344,517 acres). This image relates to an article that appeared in the July 14, 2011, issue of Science Express, published by AAAS. The study, by Y. Pan of the USDA Forest Service in Newtown Square, Pa., and colleagues was titled, "A Large and Persistent Carbon Sink in the World's Forests, 1990-2007."
