Deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) evolved a coat color to camouflage them from visually-hunting predators through multiple mutations in a single pigmentation gene. This image relates to a paper that appeared in the March 15, 2013, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The paper, by Catherine Linnen at University of Kentucky in Lexington, Ky., and colleagues was titled, "Adaptive Evolution of Multiple Traits Through Multiple Mutations at a Single Gene."
