Fourth- and fifth-stage European corn borer larvae commonly tunnel into corn stalks. The tunneling can disrupt the flow of water and nutrients between the roots and the growing parts of the plant. This image relates to an article that appeared in the Oct. 8, 2010, issue of Science, published by AAAS. The study, by Dr. William Hutchison of the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, Minn., and colleagues was titled, "Areawide Suppression of European Corn Borer with Bt Maize Reaps Savings to Non-Bt Maize Growers."
