Statistics Help Identify the Most Beneficial Dietary Oils (IMAGE)
Caption
Using a statistical technique called network meta-analysis, researchers have combined the results of dozens of studies of dietary oils to identify those with the best effect on patients' LDL cholesterol and other blood lipids. They found that diets rich in oils from seeds like canola, safflower and flaxseed produce the best LDL reductions. This figure shows illustrates the concept of network meta-analysis, which extrapolates from direct clinical comparisons to determine indirect relationships between diets that have not been compared in the clinic.
