Transgenic vs. Nontransgenic (IMAGE)
Caption
The papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) interferes with the plant's ability to photosynthesize. The transgenic papaya at the center of this field (darker, rectangular patch of green) are surrounded by non-transgenic plants. The transgenic plants contain a gene for a PRSV coat protein, which makes them resistant to the virus. The nontransgenic plants are stunted, and often produce deformed, inedible fruit.
