Triggerfish (IMAGE) Wildlife Conservation Society Caption A recent study by the Wildlife Conservation Society and the University of California at Santa Cruz found that the removal of predatory fish such as triggerfish from coral reef systems along the coast of Kenya result in the overpopulation of sea urchins. Sea urchins in turn overgraze on crustose coralline algae, the calcium carbonate-producing organisms that cause reefs to grow.
