A Modular Approach to Ion Trap Quantum Computers (IMAGE)
Caption
A programmable quantum computing module consisting of multiple trapped atomic ions that are individually addressed by lasers to perform quantum operations. Several quantum algorithms are executed on a single processor simply by writing reconfigurable sequences of quantum logic gates (background) into the processor. One possible method of scaling this to a larger computing system is by remotely connecting many such modules using photonic channels, as illustrated by a network of optical fibers that collect photons emitted by ions in different modules.
