The red harvester ant (Pogonomyrermex barbatus) is a species common in the Southwest United States. Scientists have deciphered the genome of this ant species. Published in the Jan. 31, 2011 online early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the sequenced genome could provide new insights on how embryos with the same genetic code develop into either queens or workers ants.
